USPS Dimensional Weight: What Changed on 12 July 2026
For years, US domestic dimensional weight came in two flavours. FedEx and UPS divided cubic inches by 139. USPS divided by 166 — a 19% lighter billable weight on the same box. On 12 July 2026, USPS moved to 139 as well.

The change applies to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select, and arrived with the same filing that raised retail prices. If you built a carrier-selection rule around "USPS dims lighter", that rule is now wrong.
USPS Dimensional Weight Formula and Divisor
An 18 × 14 × 12 in carton, 6 lb on the scale — a typical light, bulky parcel:
- Volume: 18 × 14 × 12 = 3,024 in³
- USPS before 12 Jul 2026: 3,024 ÷ 166 = 18.2 → 19 lb billable
- USPS from 12 Jul 2026: 3,024 ÷ 139 = 21.8 → 22 lb billable
- UPS / FedEx: same 3,024 ÷ 139 → 22 lb billable

The USPS Dimensional Weight Round-Up Nobody Announced Loudly
Alongside the divisor, USPS adopted the round-up-to-the-next-whole-inch rule that UPS and FedEx have used since 18 August 2025. Any fraction goes up: an 11.1 in side is measured as 12 in.
That compounds. Our 18 × 14 × 12 box is already whole numbers, but an 18.2 × 14.3 × 12.1 carton — the same box measured honestly, with the tape bulge — becomes 19 × 15 × 13 = 3,705 in³ → 26.7 → 27 lb. The measuring rule added five pounds that the divisor change did not. Our calculator applies both the dimension round-up and the pound round-up on the ÷139 preset, so the figure you see is the invoice figure, not a floor.
USPS Dimensional Weight vs UPS and FedEx
The divisor is now identical, so carrier choice on bulky parcels turns on the rules around it:
- The 1 ft³ threshold. USPS still applies dimensional weight only to parcels over 1,728 in³. Under that, you pay actual weight. UPS and FedEx dim-rate at any size. On a shoebox-sized light parcel USPS remains structurally cheaper — that exemption, not the divisor, was always the bigger advantage.
- Negotiated divisors. UPS and FedEx contracts can carry a softer divisor (194 was historically common at volume). USPS published prices are published prices. Above a few hundred parcels a week, a negotiated 139 → 166 on a UPS contract now buys back exactly what USPS just gave away.
- Surcharges. Large Package, Additional Handling and oversize minimums on UPS/FedEx can dwarf the DIM difference on big cartons. Compare landed cost, not billable weight.
If Your Rate Card Is Metric
The metric equivalent of ÷139 is roughly ÷5,000 cm³/kg — "roughly" because the round numbers were chosen independently: ÷139 works out to 201.4 kg/m³ while ÷5,000 is exactly 200 kg/m³. The 0.7% difference is real. If you measure in inches but quote in metric (common for Asia-based sellers shipping to the US), convert the volume first: in³ × 16.387 = cm³, then divide by 5,000. Or use a calculator that mixes units and skip the conversion.
What to Do About the USPS Dimensional Weight Change
- Re-run your top 20 SKUs. Any carton over 1 ft³ that you route to USPS because it dimmed lighter needs re-checking — the reason it won may no longer exist.
- Attack the threshold, not the divisor. Getting a carton under 1,728 in³ removes USPS dimensional weight entirely. That is a bigger lever than any divisor arbitrage, and it is under your control.
- Measure to the round number. With round-up-to-the-inch everywhere, a box that finishes at 12.1 in costs the same as one at 13.0 in. Design packaging to land just under a whole inch.
